Walter Rigg

Born in 1894 in Kendal, Westmorland, he enlisted in the Border Regiment in 1914 and served for a time in India. He later transferred to 19 DLI and fought on the Western Front. He gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal, as a Sergeant during a trench raid in 1918, when he "showed great gallantry and devotion to duty, being responsible for keeping the party together in spite of difficulties. He, with his officer, bombed the enemy with great effect, and although wounded, he was the last man of the party to leave the enemy position". In civilian life, he worked at a shoe factory in Kendal. Walter Rigg died in 1962, aged 68 years.
